Newborn Baby Care After Birth

 Newborn Baby Care After Birth

There are a lot of things that go into caring for a newborn.

It is obvious for new parents to have questions on everything related to their baby.

First few months with a newborn baby is very tedious.

Here are some of the most immediate things to be done, as soon as your baby is born.

1) Umbilical Cord Care: During pregnancy, the umbilical cord was a lifeline to your baby. However, after birth, it isn’t required anymore.

After cutting the Umbilical Cord, the stump of the Umbilical Cord remains in your child’s navel. Don’t try to remove the stump, as it will eventually fall off by itself.

Take care of the Umbilical Cord. Ask your doctor about how to clean Umbilical Cord.

2) Breastfeeding: You can start breastfeeding your baby about an hour or two after birth. The initial milk is thick, yellowish and is nutrient rich. It is called Colostrum.

Breastfeed your baby constantly or on demand slowly your milk supply and baby feeding patterns will adjust.

Feed your baby or walk in the fresh air and have skin to skin contact to soothe a crying baby.

Wash your hands properly before preparing formula milk for your baby if your baby is formula fed.

Burp your baby after every feeding to avoid gas and colic.

Never shake the baby and do not let anyone shake baby’s organs are still delicate and may cause injury by shaking.

3) Initial Breathing: Post birth, the baby’s lungs which were previously filled with fluid, are now filled with air. This sudden shift can be difficult for a baby.

The first few breaths of your infant are usually hard, labored, shallow and irregular. This isn’t a cause for concern, as long as the baby’s breathing steadies and normalizes eventually.

4) Weighing Your Baby: The weight of your child is an indicator of how child is doing. Most newborns weigh between 2 kg to 4 kg which initially decreases and then increases.

5) Skin to Skin Contact: Your baby is placed against your naked skin and a blanket is wrapped around both of you. You will see the baby relax almost instantly and familiarize himself with you.

Keep the baby’s nails trimmed so that the baby may not scratch his own face.

6) Vitamin K: Vitamin K is administered to the newborn to prevent any bleeding as it helps in clotting of blood.

7) Eye Care: Your baby’s eyes are extremely sensitive. Within an hour after birth, the doctor will put some eye drops to prevent any infection. Regular wipe the eyes with a damp cloth.

8) Hepatitis B Vaccination: The Hepatitis B vaccination is essential as the disease is fatal. Every vaccination is important for your child so mark the dates and make sure you get him vaccinated.

9) Bathing: For the first week and a half give your child a sponge bath with warm water and a gentle cloth, so the Umbilical Cord stump can dry.

Give a gentle massage to your baby every day to improve blood circulation and indigestion.

Bathe your baby gently. Make sure that room temperature is warm.

Keep everything ready before giving a bath like a diaper, fresh clothes, cotton balls, a towel etc.

Keep the child warm for some initial days and make sure the baby is covered from head to toe.

Do not wrap your baby in more layers of blanket and do not make the baby too hot.

Keep blanket no higher than shoulders and leave the head uncovered.

Bathing your baby three days a week is enough as his skin is extremely sensitive and prone to dryness. Make sure the water is lukewarm and not extremely cold or hot.

Use a mild soap and shampoo. You don’t have to wash your baby’s hair everyday twice or thrice a week should suffice.

Feed your baby after giving a bath. Baby loves to sleep after a bath.

Change baby’s nappy frequently. Do not leave your baby in wet nappy or heavy diaper.

10) Physical Examination: A physical examination after birth is necessary. The doctor will examine your child to see if he is healthy.

11) Providing Warmth to Baby: Swaddling your baby helps in regulating body temperature. Wipe your child dry immediately after a bath and make him wear warm clothes.

Keep the diaper rashes ointment always available. Rashes are common.

Give some diaper free time to your baby every day to avoid rashes and breathe the skin freely.

Use baby wipes or warm water to clean the baby’s bottom at every diaper change.

12) Supporting Your Baby Neck: Support baby’s neck and head while holding the baby for initial 3 months at least or till the time neck starts to support the head.

13) Baby Crying: Baby crying is normal. Try to recognize the causes of crying causes may be hungered a diaper change, bay wants to sleep or baby is not well.

Be flexible and do not try to fix a routine for baby’s sleep, crying or nappy changes. Do not expect your baby to sleep during nights and awake during the day.

Newborns sleep approx. 20 hours out of 24 in initial days.

14) Baby Stools: It is normal that the first few stools of the baby are sticky and blackish in color.
